Important Note about prescription drugs and 'without prescription' Uses of Xenical (Orlistat) Xenical is a prescription weight-control medication useful for the long-term treatment of significant obesity. Xenical can also help to improve risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar which, if not treated, could lead to other diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Xenical is a weight loss medication that targets the absorption of fat in your body rather than suppressing the appetite. Each Xenical capsule contains 120 mg of the active substance orlistat, which acts as a lipase inhibitor. Dietary fats are inhibited from being absorbed and this allows about 30% of the fat eaten in the meal to pass through the gut undigested. This helps to reduce and maintain body weight, as well as to minimize any weight regain. How to take Xenical (Orlistat) Xenical is taken with each meal (three times daily). The daily fat intake should be divided equally between these three meals to enable the benefit from Xenical's actions. Xenical should be swallowed with water. Side effects of Xenical (Orlistat) Loose stools and increased gas or flatulence. These symptoms are generally mild, occur at the beginning of Xenical treatment, go away after a short period of time and are particularly experienced after meals containing high levels of fat. Normally, these symptoms disappear if you continue Xenical treatment and keep to your recommended diet. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to Xenical is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Precautions Xenical can cause changes in your bowel habits, such as fatty or oily stools, due to the elimination of undigested fat in your stool. Xenical reduces the absorption of supplements of some fat soluble nutrients, particularly beta-carotene and vitamin E. You should therefore follow your doctor's advice in taking a well balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables. DO NOT TAKE Xenical if you are allergic to it or are allergic to any ingredient in this product. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE. Exceeding the recommended dose will not make you lose more weight and may increase side effects. Xenical may reduce the absorption of necessary fat-soluble vitamins. To ensure that you are receiving adequate amounts of these vitamins, ask your doctor or pharmacist about the use of a vitamin supplement that would be right for you. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any other medicines used for weight loss/management. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Xenical during pregnancy. Xenical is not recommended for use during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF Xenical IS EXCRETED in breast milk. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Xenical. IF YOU HAVE DIABETES, Xenical may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine. Drug interactions Tell your doctor of all prescription and non-prescription medication you use, especially of: cyclosporine, "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), drugs for diabetes (e.g., insulin), other drugs used for weight loss. Cyclosporine should be taken at least 2 hours before or after orlistat to assure maximum absorption of the cyclosporine into your bloodstream. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Overdose If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Notes Do not share Xenical with others. Follow your doctor-approved nutritional, reduced-calorie diet containing about 30 percent calories from fat. Also, exercise is recommended; however, first consult your doctor or pharmacist. Missed dose If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Storage Store at room temperature (77 degrees F, 25 degrees C), away from sunlight and moisture. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.
